Abstract:

Security is an aspect of software development that is more important than ever! It is not for nothing that security has been included as a quality characteristic in ISO 25010. We usually use a wide variety of concepts, technologies and libraries to implement security concerns. However, these implementations and measures usually do not affect the core of our application - its domain layer: This is where the actual business logic is implemented and security is therefore particularly relevant. Because security is a holistic and global aspect it should be considered in all layers of an application.

This talk introduces "Security by Design" in the classic sense and then explains the relevance of the topic of security for the core of applications and their domain layer. Using various examples, it shows typical security problems and how we can counter them by using well-known design patterns, including some from domain-driven design (DDD). One of these examples is cross-site scripting, which we can already prevent by using value objects.

The Internet is the greatest machine every built. It spans the whole planet, reaches up into space and down the ocean. It connects people and devices globally. It revolutionized communication, economy, gaming, logistics, and military, just to name a few. But the internet of the future, a.k.a. the Internet of Everything (IoE), will connect even more people and zillions of devices of all kinds. It will enable new services and applications e.g., for e-healthcare, intelligent transportation systems and industrial automation. These will have diversified demands for guaranteed bandwidth, ultra-low latency, and strict quality of service. Abstract:

We will provide answers and solutions to the challenges of new services and applications in the next generation internet, a.k.a. the Internet of Everything (IoE). We will transform the participants of this workshop from users to makers. In this workshop you will learn how to build a strategy and an implementation for a new and enhanced transport protocol. We will first recapitulate how the current standard Transport Control Protocol (TCP) works and analyse its shortcomings from today’s perspective for modern workloads. Afterwards, individual working groups will implement different approaches on how new, improved alternatives to TCP could work. Each group is free to implement one of these approaches via Xyna Factory and a network simulator for various generated static and – like the formation of Starlink satellites – dynamically reconfiguring networks. At the end of the workshop, you will understand the future demands on the next generation internet and have a prototype implemented for a new, software-defined transport protocol to meet these needs.

Abstract:

In recent years, we have seen an increasing number of reports about ransomware attacks on international corporations in the daily news. Ransomware is not a modern invention, but has been around for more than 40 years, making it older than the World Wide Web. In recent years, ransomware itself and the way it is distributed has evolved significantly. Large corporations and especially critical infrastructure are often target of Ransomware attacks.

An example for a ransomware attack is the recent Colonial Pipeline Hack in May 2021. The Colonial Pipeline Company owns one of the largest oil pipelines in the US. It extends over 5,500 miles of pipeline, in which around 2.5 million barrels of fuel are transported daily. In 2021 the pipeline was victim of a ransomware attack. The hackers extorted more than 100 gigabytes of data from the pipeline and infected parts of the digital systems, like billing and accounting. Due to that, the Colonial Pipeline Company had to shut down their systems and their service to their customers to prevent the ransomware from spreading. Due to their service to deliver oil for gasoline, jet fuel and for home heating, the ransomware attack affected consumers and airlines all along the East Coast of the US. The former president of the United States Joe Biden even declared a state of emergency because the pipeline moves oil from refineries to industry markets and the shutdown resulted in a temporary fuel shortage. This problem was only solved because Colonial Pipeline paid the ransom to the hacker group to obtain the decryption key to get back the control of the pipelines systems.

This is an example of how vast a ransomware attack can affect the entire citizenry. During this attack, Colonial Pipeline's board of directors had to make complex business decisions. Together, we will explore the challenge that ransomware poses to our clients and take a closer look at the origins of ransomware as well as the background to today’s attacks.

This is in gross contrast to popular use cases: For instance, almost no one seems to ask their Alexa for more than the weather or bad jokes. Fabian Schneider leads the engineering, development and operations teams in the Access 4.0 Program at Deutsche Telekom since early 2022. Abstract:

TCloud hosting capabilities and platforms rise to the challenge of automatically managing complex Cloud infrastructure. Manual administration of infrastructure in the Cloud, similar to the approach used by traditional IT infrastructure, is not feasible due to Cloud services' short lifecycle. It is fast to spin up a server, but more often than not, it has to be decommissioned rapidly too. Furthermore, excessive manual administration is prone to human error, employee fatigue, and boredom.

Several solutions have already been established as industry Best Practices. Buzzwords such as Infrastructure-as-Code, Policy-as-Code, and Everything-as-Code are already being implemented in startups and enterprises. When utilising the Cloud, one must dive deeply into these concepts that fall into the realm of DevSecOps.

This Presentation will present the implementation of a state-of-the-art IaC Automation Framework. Tools used include Terraform, terratest, K8s, Helm Chart, Gitlab CI/CD, checkov, and automated secrets detection. Combining these tools provides the DevOps Engineer and Developers a self-serving, pipelined, opinionated toolset, which is automated with a human touch, to increase productivity.

Abstract:

With 220 operation licenses since 2019, private 5G networks are a success story for the German industry. Many of these networks perform critical tasks, such as industrial automation, and are reasonably protected against attacks from the outside. However, 5G networks take little measure to protect themselves from inside attacks. We argue that the mobile industry has neglected the risk of backdoors and covert channels in its radio infrastructure so far. For 5G this is especially critical at the hardware level, since the modem is ideally positioned for eavesdropping, can be updated (and, thus, manipulated) remotely, and is manufactured outside Europe.

Taking a radical approach, we assume that the entire 5G radio infrastructure cannot be trusted and present a solution: Scanner 1 -- a zero-trust controller for protecting private 5G networks. By continuously monitoring the spectrum, Scanner 1 detects and classifies unexpected radio transmissions at the physical level. Once a rogue signal is exposed, Scanner 1 localizes its origin and prevents the attack. To do so, Scanner 1 runs machine learning and control algorithms on a Software-defined Radio and Software-defined Networking controller. Our talk will introduce this new concept, describe ongoing product development and field tests, and present Trailblazer Networks -- the startup behind Scanner 1.

Quality in agile is assured by the teams? Sounds good in theory, in practice we experience time and again that the more agile software delivery gets scaled this statement is not sufficient. Quality assurance needs a solid test fundament, supporting pillars that consider the people (roles), the approach and tools as well as other supporting measures. But that is not it. On top of that, to further improve on the process quality lean-quality management methods should be taken into consideration. Reading this there might be an image of a house already in your head. That is why we came up with the framework: “House of agile Quality”. You can understand it as an instrument to structurally assess, transform and continuously improve quality assurance and management along an agile transformation. During our speech we would like to introduce the framework to you, to present you a short section from the book of the same name and mention some quality related trends that might be found in the garden of our house in the future.

Vivianes focus area is on structured improvements of quality processes in scaled agile product development initiatives. For that she is combining testing experience with her background in communication management and training skills. This combination supports in defining and improving quality assurance processes, documenting and communicating them and bringing them to life.

Today, robots can relieve people from dull and dangerous tasks also in less predictable environments and situations such as inspecting industrial sites and assets. This session is about diving into the business and technology aspects of autonomous robotics systems used for inspection with two client-inspired showcases with different technologies 1 end-to-end drone inspection of a harbor, and 2 legged-robot inspection of an energy plant.

The implementation of robotic systems requires cross-disciplinary work applying systems thinking across embedded, computer vision, signal processing, optimization, connectivity, distributed systems, cloud, user experience and human machine interaction. goSDN is an open source software-defined network controller developed by the danet research group at the University of Applied Sciences Darmstadt. It is used in research (e.g. project DemoQuanDT), in teaching, as a research platform for multiple master thesis, and soon in the daily operations of one of the danet’s labs.

This talk will give a short introduction to software-defined networking and what enhancements software-defined network controllers can provide in this context. It will provide an insight in how goSDN uses micro-services to manage network elements, how it archives high availability and uses an event system to react programmatically to network changes. A specialty of goSDN is that it is based on model-driven software engineering and thus working with YANG models of network elements and a strong focus on GNMI as protocol between controller and network elements. In contrast to existing controllers goSDN wants to provide a more general platform for software defined network applications and has a low resource footprint (e.g. runs on your Raspberry Pi). The talk requires no knowledge about existing software-defined network solutions, model-driven software engineering or YANG. But a general understanding of the management of network elements or the internals of small local network can be beneficial.

GraalVM is a - not entirely new - virtual machine for Java which is gaining popularity with developers and software architects. Graal promises improved performance by compiling Java code "ahead-of-time" into so called native images. Instead of bytecode, the result is executable machine code which does not rely on a virtual machine. The resulting faster startup times make it an interesting technology for cloud deployments.

In this presentation we give a short overview over GraalVM and native images. We show where using Graal yields performance benefits and where a traditional virtual machine will be faster, and show some pitfalls of using GraalVM.

Video-based Point Cloud Coding (V-PCC) has emerged as the MPEG standard for the compression of dynamic Point Clouds (PC). Instrumental to its success is that it allows transmitting Point Cloud objects over the Internet using the well established methods for video streaming. In the first part of the talk, we will give an introduction to the coding of dynamic point cloud sequences with V-PCC and review related methods for the compression of Point Cloud data. Challenges and current research methods for point cloud streaming will be elaborated.

A key difference, however, to classical video streaming is that at any point in time only a portion of the PC objects in the scene is visible to the user. Hence, streaming an entire object in one encoding quality wastes bandwidth. In the second part of the talk, we present Normal-separated Video-based Point Cloud Compression (NoVA-PCC) - a method to combine video-based Point Cloud encoding with an object decomposition based on surface normals. In a nutshell, using NoVA-PCC we obtain non-overlapping, separately encoded view-specific segments that can be streamed independently. This encoding flexibility is then leveraged to guide the streaming client to select the bit rates of the view-specific segments, e.g. to assign higher qualities to better visible PC object parts. Given a fixed available streaming bandwidth we show that this increases the visual quality compared to compressing PC objects at one overall quality. We also show that this degree of freedom of assigning bit rates to view-specific segments allows better utilization of the available streaming bandwidth when compared with a fixed set of predefined overall object qualities. Finally, in the light of dynamic user motion in multi-object scenes, we show the need for accurate user motion prediction to effectively utilize the streaming bandwidth on the visible PC object parts.

  View-dependent Streaming of dynamic Point Clouds

Abstract:

To stand out against competition, one of the vitally important challenges for a company is to develop a profound understanding of its own processes and subsequently optimize process flows (Davenport 2006). This can both lead to a more economical use of internal resources and improve customer experience. To enable and facilitate process optimization, process aware information systems record process related data. Further analyses of these recorded data sets are often limited to a descriptive presentation of historic processes, so the vast potential of the available data is poorly used only.

Applying advanced data science methods on such data sets can enable a company to learn more from past processes, and gain better insights faster. This way one can identify influencing variables which facilitate or hinder a desired behavior, such as e.g. short process times. With this knowledge it is possible to predict the properties of future processes more accurately. In doing so promptly, a company can in particular intervene once a deviating or undesired behavior is forecasted.

In our case study, we combined approaches from process mining with explainable machine learning methods. Process mining is increasingly established in many businesses and organizations, and has multiple applications today (Mehdiyev et al. 2020). We worked on a real-life data set related to the e-mail processing inside an insurance company. According to the enterprise’s SLA (service level agreement), these processes should not take longer than 48 hours. In our analysis we worked towards understanding in which cases compliance with this SLA is not possible. Since e-mail processes and their durations might vary widely for different subjects, we focused on two types of customer requests, one specific (Euro zone direct debit mandate) and one broad (general correspondence). We trained random forests (Ho 1995), using meta information and event logs which were available for the e-mails, to determine the most important influencing variables. We derived proposals on how to improve e-mail processing.

This also includes penetration tests as a verification measure, for which the automation potential is far from exhausted. Here, possibilities for automation are shown and solutions are examined.

Abstract:

Intent-Based Networking (IBN) promises to decrease the manual labor of network service management and orchestration. This can be achieved with highly automated processes. Furthermore, IBN can enable customer self-service as well as an easier translation of business goals into network configurations and service compositions. Therefore, IBN can reduce the time and overall costs of network and service management when compared to traditional means. IBN operates based on abstract input called ‘intent’. Intent expresses ‘what’ and ‘why’ but not ‘how’ something should be realized. With IBN the ‘how’ is abstracted and the resulting plan is realized. Moreover, with IBN the fulfillment of intent is enforced continuously. The concept of IBN and the current market development is presented. In addition, a short live demonstration of an IBN system (ONOS) managing a small virtual network is shown.

Abstract:

Unikernel is innovative and very promising for scaling and high-performance computing on the lowest footprint. It is a bootable image that is composed of a single application and its kernel functionality requirements. Thus, it forms a common memory area and does not require a context switch when calling system functions. This has enormous advantages and is particularly interesting for microservice applications where high availability, provided by fast booting times, good performance, due to a combined user/kernel space, and security, are essential. Nevertheless, unikernels are hardly known and have not yet reached commercial success. This is due to two factors, first, many of the unikernels are short-term research projects and do not get further investigated after research results are gathered, second, unikernel only support single process applications which makes it hard to debug because of not being able to run debugging tools with the application.

Abstract:

It all started with a few engineers asking why BIM (building information modeling - the basis for digitization in construction) is not used in the facility management of the numerous DB-buildings, once they are no longer in the planning and building phase, because digitalization continues unwaveringly at this point. It would have been a quick fix to provide an out-of-the-box BIM solution to those asking for it. However, conversations with operational employees showed that there is even more potential to push the limitations of BIM.

On the other hand, digital twin is probably THE buzzword, making every facility manager listening up, who is looking for a way to increase production time and reduce downtime all while gaining a reputation as a truly innovative employer. However, all the promising features of digital twins are also made for a rocky path to implementation.

So where to start? Felicitas and Benedict will present on how DB started the journey to digital building twins, while keeping the future users in the center of their actions.

Felicitas Fetzer studied Supply Chain Management at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. However, warehouses and ports could not convince her to pursue her career in the operative field. Felicitas is a consultant at DB Systel, with focus on innovation and strategy. She is the project manager for the digital buildings twin project in addition to leading the accelerator for 3D maps.

Benedict Haas studied business administration with a focus on finance and IT in Mainz and Bamberg. Even before joining DB Systel, he gained a wide range of experiences as an IT and innovation consultant at one of the leading Big4 management consultancies. Since university he has been concerned with digital transformation and its economic potential already. As a digital consultant at DB Systel, he focusses on digital business models and the companie’s strategic realignment.

Having over 20 years of experience in the network industry, from designing and building a fully automated, country-wide xDSL network at Arcor/Vodafone, via driving SDN and FMC at NEC and being one of the originators of DT's Access 4.0 programme, he is now with Radisys as head of strategic market development. Hans-Joerg is driving the r/evolution of software-driven networks in open fixed and mobile networks.
